Midlands Hurricanes player to take on tough challenge to ensure hospitalised children can enjoy Christmas

Coventry Bears may have undergone a rebrand ahead of next season, but the heart of the club still remains intact and that’s there for all to see in the shape of Liam Welham.

Welham, alongside brother Matt, was the first player to commit his future to the newly named Midlands Hurricanes in November having scored 12 tries in 17 games for the club including a brace in a thumping win over West Wales Raiders last season.

After signing a new deal he emphasised how eager he was to keep going for the club: “I am really looking forward to next season and it has been a pleasure being involved with the club so far. The club has made leaps and bounds forward and everyone has played their part both on and off the field. It has been hard for people like Alan Robinson to sustain everything with the recent funding challenges in the game and thankfully with new investment and the new club both he and the club can continue fulfilling their dreams of developing the game down here. Not letting all their hard work go to waste Alan and his team made a new plan and found other enthusiastic and motivated people I think this is fantastic and has a potential to create a massive impact on the sport within the area. With the correct people in place the team is going to improve, inspire and enforce the brand with the rugby league family and I’m happy to play my part in that.”

However, what he does week in week out on the pitch is set to pale in comparison to the challenge he’s taking on this Christmas. Welham will be doing a wheelchair stint for 24 hours before playing a game of rugby union straight after as he hopes to raise money for hospitalised children this festive period who could go without presents.

The club have promoted his fundraising effort on Instagram noting their pride at his efforts as well as emphasising how the smallest donation could help change a child’s Christmas for the better in 2021.

You can donate to this amazing cause here. He has already raised over £800 but every little helps especially when you consider how willing Liam is to go through the pain barrier stating on his Just Giving page: “My pain is nothing compared to the pain the children suffer at this time of year.”
