Melbourne Storm set to enter transfer market for Super League target Tariq Sims following injury crisis

Melbourne Storm were rocked by injuries to three key men in their victory over Wests Tigers today.

Brandon Smith, George Jennings and Christian Welch all looked in agony as they left the field and it has prompted Craig Bellamy to hit the transfer market in a bid to find a short-term replacement.

One of those who Storm are apparently looking at is St George Illawarra Dragons forward Tariq Sims, who has been on the periphery for the Dragons since the off-season despite his New South Wales State of Origin representation in 2021.

Sims had been linked with a move to Super League side Leeds Rhinos last year, but nothing came of it and the rampaging forward stopped in the NRL.

After earning State of Origin appearances, it is perhaps baffling that the Dragons are willing to let go of him, but there are no shortage of suitors – including both in the NRL and Super League with Parramatta Eels previously thought to be winning the race.

As many as eight clubs were said to be chasing him before Christmas, but Sims said he was keen to prove what he can do

“I’m under no illusion what’s at stake but I’m always one to run towards the competition and prove myself,” Sims told Channel 9.

“It was very emotional at the start (when he knew he wouldn’t be staying), it’s a business and I love my Dragons.

“I’ve never taken anything for granted pulling on the jersey – before every game, before I put my jersey on, I smell it and I think about my family, my teammates and those who have pulled it on before me and making sure I represent them the best I can.”

However, his stay at St George may come to a premature end.
