McNamara praises halfbacks after eighth consecutive win

Catalans Dragons Head Coach Steve McNamara praised half-back James Maloney as his side recorded their eighth consecutive win to remain at the top of the Betfred Super League.

Maloney slotted over two goals in the win but provided more than one key play to help the Dragons overturn an 18-8 half-time deficit to claim a 26-18 win against Leeds.

Reflecting on Maloney’s performance, McNamara said, “I thought James Maloney was composed. He knew what to do at the right time.

“I thought Arthur Mourgue was pretty sensational with his running game. He caused a lot of havoc but James’ experience in that second half, he knew when and how to kick the ball; what play to put on and when to put it on and which pass to make.

“He came up with some fantastic plays for us and that is his job. It is great to have leaders like him and Sam Tomkins in the group to look to.”

The win set a new club record for consecutive wins as the Dragons remain top of the league.

Having his say on the achievement, McNamara added, “It is a new record for the club, winning eight consecutive matches which is good.

“You have to ride these waves when you are on them and as long as you can.

“We have all been involved in the sport for long enough to know that there are lots of highs and lows.

“At the minute, the players are confident and happy. Despite having to travel a lot, they are winning games and hopefully we can continue that next week.”
