Matty Russell reveals how Warrington Wolves return happened and promises he’ll be better than last time

Matty Russell is back at Warrington in 2023.
He originally signed for the club in 2014 after playing for Wigan Warriors, Hull FC and Gold Coast Titans prior to a return to the UK with the Wolves in 2014.
Since his exit, he moved on to play for Toronto Wolfpack, Leigh Leopards, then Centurions, and the Toulouse Olympique.
Following, Toulouse’s relegation, it was reported in France that Russell only wanted a move to Super League and he has got it with a return to the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Speaking after re-joining the club, Russell revealed that as soon as the chance to return to Warrington opened up, he took it: “To get another chance at this great club means everything.
“It only feels like yesterday I was here! It’s great to be back and I’m very grateful for the opportunity. Once I heard Warrington were interested and I spoke to Daryl [Powell] and Karl [Fitzpatrick] it was a no brainer for me to re-sign.”
He promised that he was going to be even better than his first stint at the club which is a bold statement after he played in the Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final in his first spell at Warrington and will turn 30 in the 2023 season.
He said: “I feel I’m coming back a much better player and I want to bring my value to the team. Physically I’ve developed a lot from when I first arrived. Away from the field also I’m coming back more professional and want to be a role model which will hopefully reap the rewards on the field also.”
