Tonight was a huge night of rugby league action especially with one of the biggest shocks of the season as Wigan Warriors were stunned at Belle Vue by Wakefield Trinity.
On a night when St Helens moved to third with a win over Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards cemented second beating Castleford Tigers, the Warriors needed a win and were beaten in Golden Point.
Matt Peet gave his thoughts after the game: “There were times where we were good, but overall we were too inconsistent and lacked intelligence to see the game out.”
He did argue that there were some positives in the performance from his side:
“I thought Brad O’Neill was excellent, Morgan [Smithies] and Joe Shorrocks played big minutes and Junior [Nsemba] showed what he is capable of.”
He also revealed a nasty injury blow for Ethan Havard: “Ethan has strained his hamstring but to what degree we don’t know.”
Going into the game Jake Wardle was missing as surprise absentee.
After the game Peet explained the decision why the former Huddersfield Giants and Warrington man was left out:
“He has been carrying a few bumps and bruises so we thought this would be a time to freshen him up as he’s been playing through pain in the last couple weeks.”
The Warriors don’t have time to stew in the defeat.
They take on Warrington Wolves next week before a Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR at Leeds Rhinos’ Headingley Stadium.
