Matt Peet identifies the two key players in Wigan Warriors’ win over Hull KR and relishes the prospect of a selection headache

Wigan Warriors Head Coach Matt Peet was pleased with his side’s performance in their 24-10 away victory at Hull KR, highlighting Australian Jai Field as a stand-out.

Field arrived at the club from Parramatta Eels in 2021 but has had horrific luck with injury, missing almost the entirety of last year.

However, he has started 2022 in fine form, scoring a superb try and helping the Warriors end a run of three consecutive defeats against the Robins.

Reflecting on Field’s contribution, Peet said “It would be good headache selection, between Bevan French and Jai.

“I was really pleased for Jai. It was not a real surprise to me that he was in the game as much as he was.

“He played very well and we have seen glimpses of that in pre-season.”

Although Field impressed, and perhaps pulled a lot of focus, another who did not escape the radar was half-back Cade Cust.

A leading Man of Steel contender, Cust arrived over from Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles ahead of this season and played an important part in the win, his kick from the scrum even setting up Field’s try after KR were caught unawares.

Offering his thoughts on Cust, Peet added, “I thought Cade was busy, lively and competed well.

“He made some good kicks and was always in the game which is what we want from him.

“We want him to be a threat. I was most pleased for him. For his first hit-out in Super League, I thought it bodes well for the future.”

A good day at the office for Wigan under Peet, who began his official competitive venture as Head Coach with a convincing win.

Speaking on his own experiences, Peet said, “I came into tonight with the natural pre-match nerves that I would expect.

“My mind was telling me ‘all was good’ and we have practised and prepared to be consistent and not to worry about the result.

“But I did have butterflies and I suppose that is why anyone is involved in sport. It motivates me, being out of my comfort zone and I did feel like that.”
