Matt Peet has honest say on Harry Newman

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet was naturally delighted with his side’s win over Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup.

But what did he make of the performance?

Here is what he said:

“I am proud of the team, the group, players and staff. It has obviously been a long week. Even as we started the game, I didn’t think we were good enough but in the end it was our desire and commitment to each other that shone through.”

He also gave an assessment on the Rhinos:

“I always thought this game would ebb and flow. All our games against Leeds have in the past and I think every game you watch with Leeds, they never go away and when it sticks for them they have so many good athletes.”

He then picked out Harry Newman after he was the centre of attention for some time after the game because of the moment where he didn’t pass to Richie Myler in what could have been a game winning play.

Peet said of Newman:

“Harry Newman is obviously a very outstanding player alongside Nene MacDonald. They have threat and it is combined with intelligence from the likes of Aidan Sezer and Richie Myler who have been around the block.”

Addressing that moment in particular, Peet said:

“Everyone talks about Bevan French’s highlight reel but what I love most about him is his character and willingness to come up with the big plays in crucial moments and not just in attack.”
