Matt Peet explains why Wigan Warriors suffered shock defeat against Wakefield Trinity

Wigan Warriors

We are blessed with some brilliant coaches in Super League such as Rohan Smith at Leeds Rhinos, Daryl Powell at Warrington Wolves, Paul Rowley at Salford Red Devils, Ian Watson at Huddersfield Giants, Adrian Lam at Leigh Leopards and Steve McNamara at Catalans Dragons as well as the emerging talent of Paul Wellens but also Wigan Warriors counterpart Matt Peet.

Only 18 months into the job and Peet has a Challenge Cup to his name but his second season so far has been much less smoother than his inaugural year in charge.

But Peet is a credit to the game for his honesty after every performance and that was no different last night as the Warriors were stunned by Wakefield Trinity in golden point.

After the game, Peet explained why the Warriors were beaten: “There were times where we were good, but overall we were too inconsistent and lacked intelligence to see the game out.”

Having blamed the defeat to a lack of intelligence, Peet highlighted some positives:

“I thought Brad O’Neill was excellent, Morgan [Smithies] and Joe Shorrocks played big minutes and Junior [Nsemba] showed what he is capable of.”

One big negative however is the loss of Ethan Havard. He suffered a hamstring injury with Peet saying:

“Ethan has strained his hamstring but to what degree we don’t know.”

This exacerbated the loss of centre Jake Wardle with the former Huddersfield and Warrington centre unable to feature:

“He has been carrying a few bumps and bruises so we thought this would be a time to freshen him up as he’s been playing through pain in the last couple weeks.”
