The headlines coming out of last night’s game at Salford were Bevan French’s hat-trick and another statement win from the Warriors who continue to look like genuine title contenders in 2022.
However, that narrative might be an oversimplification. The first half ended with the Warriors 6-0 in front after a tough 40 minutes and yes the Warriors ran away with things in the second half winning 30-12, after the game Wigan coach Matt Peet suggested that this “obvious” narrative was not necessarily the right narrative.
He said in his press conference after the game: “I know the obvious thing is that we broke away in the second half but I don’t think people should take their attention away from the intensity of that game in the first half.
“It was a game where both teams went toe to toe, but we were able to maintain it for longer.”

He also had time to praise his side’s attack noting the change in approach in the second 40: “It’s always pleasing to score. We did expect a tight game, our two games against Salford so far this year have been close and physical affairs.
“From the start of the second half we were a bit more direct, more patient and when we did move the ball there was a little bit more space to play.”
It pushes the Warriors up to second two points behind St Helens before the Champions take on Hull KR. Their response to winning the Challenge Cup has been one of ‘business as usual’ and has had them headed in the right direction as he plough full steam ahead into the second half of the campaign.
