It has been revealed today that former Salford Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash has been declared bankrupt.

However, Koukash has not only just been declared bankrupt today. In fact, it happened nearly eight months ago but the details have only been released by the court today.

This also means he faces just under five months left of his bankruptcy.

As per the government website, Koukash will be freed from bankruptcy (discharged as it is referred to legally) after 12 months, so in September. This ends the bankruptcy restrictions and releases Koukash from most of the debts he had when the bankruptcy order was made.

He will be automatically discharged even if no payments have been made to his creditors.

Koukash became a prominent figure in rugby league from 2013 onwards when he took ownership of the Red Devils but having left the club it seems financial troubles have found him.

He was keen to splash the cash at Salford though and in a busy first year in charge, the Palestine-born businessman signed the likes of Rangi Chase, Gareth Hock and Harrison Hansen with coaches such as Brian Noble, Iestyn Harris and Ian Watson involved during his tenure.

January 2018 saw him sell his share in the club after a lack of success and that sale saw ownership transfer to a consortium of long-standing supporters.

There have been subtle hints of his current plight lately such as the fact his horses haven’t appeared at his favourite track lately and also his lack of presence on social media.
