On Friday night we saw some big games as Leeds Rhinos met Hull KR in a golden point classic whilst Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves collided on Sky Sports all the while Huddersfield Giants showed what they can do defeating Wakefield Trinity.
It was a real setback for Trinity after three wins from their previous four had given them a huge shot at survival.
Many felt that Wakefield, who took around a thousand fans to the game, were favourites but in the end the Giants claimed back to back wins to essentially secure their Super League standing.
Trinity were simply outplayed by the Giants and coach Mark Applegarth was left disappointed by his side’s display.
“I’m disappointed. I thought we got out played from the first minute. I thought we were flat,” he said on BBC Radio Leeds.
“I don’t know if we’ve fallen in love with ourselves over the last fortnight and forgot about what got us the wins in the first place.
“I thought Huddersfield outplayed us from the first minute. It’s important we learn some lessons from that. It hurts, we thought we were going to play a lot better than that tonight.
“I’m disappointed and there are disappointed bodies in there but it’s important that we stick together. We’ve not shown up tonight.
“I thought we struggled to get out of our own half all game whether it’s through their defence or us not running with purpose. We didn’t move the ball around as clinical as we have been recently.
“I thought Huddersfield were outstanding, they played a 9/10 or 10/10 and we were nowhere near that. They dominated field position. It is a step backwards.”
Trinity have now given Castleford Tigers a huge boost ahead of their game against Hull FC today.
Cas can re-establish a four point lead on Trinity in the relegation battle with a win at the MKM Stadium which would be a decisive blow to Trinity.
