Mark Applegarth outlines halfback plan, pre-season date and steps in the way of recruitment at Wakefield Trinity

It’s a big period for Wakefield.

Not only because they are redeveloping their ground but because they have taken a new direction in terms of coaching staff with young coach Mark Applegarth appointed as the man in charge.

Today it has been confirmed that he will be joined by highly thought of now former York City Knights coach James Ford.

This comes after the club confirmed their first major signing of the season in the shape or Morgan Smith, and speaking on Wakefield’s Twitter, coach Applegarth spoke highly of the young halfback confirming he hasn’t settled on a halfback pairing yet for 2023 with Mason Lino and Lee Gaskell options: “I’ve been monitoring Morgan for a number of years when he was at Warrington and when he had that year at London and I think he’s earnt his chance.

“I like what I saw at Featherstone this year. With Mason, Gaskell and Morgan, I think we have a decent trio there and as I have said to them all I’ll pick on form, on efforts in training.

“He’s definitely full of enthusiasm to earn his shirt and I’m looking forward to working with him and developing him into a regular Super League half.”

It sounds like Smith might be the first of many for Trinity moving forward as Applegarth gave an update on recruitment revealing though that there are a number of steps in the way: “We’re working hard to get some signings over the line.

“It’s one of them, we’ve identified targets and then there’s all the stuff that comes with it: agent negotiation, club negotiation and making sure the player is the right fit for the club and the club is the right fit for the player.

“Making sure the players are right for the club and right for the team and I think every player we are speaking to should add some addition if we can get them over the line.”

Lastly Applegarth confirmed when Wakefield would return for pre-season: “Yeah, the lads are back in at the end of this month on Monday 31st.”
