Mark Applegarth explains why Wakefield are struggling at the start of the season

Mark Applegarth as head coach of Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield Trinity’s tough start to the season didn’t get any better last night as they lost to Hull KR making it six defeats from six to start the season.

Speaking after the game, Mark Applegarth explained what is going wrong identifying the persistent changes in the back and spine as key to their struggles as well as expected confidence issues.

He said:

“I can’t keep sitting here and saying that it’s because of this, this and this. We need to start learning our lessons, however you wrap it up this next month of rugby there’s some big games in there.

“When you haven’t won in six there’s bound to be confidence issues but I don’t think we’ve put the same one, six and seven combo out this year  yet so that tells you how things are in them departments.

“We’re getting some bodies back around the corner and hopefully we can build some stability and some flow because as you can see we look a bit disjointed and a bit rattled, which comes through not winning.

“A bit of self-belief and a bit of accountability is needed, let’s not forget that I’ve got accountability as a coach. Sometimes you’ve got to take it on the chin, we’ll have a look at whether we’ve prepared the players properly from a game plan point of view and the players will have a look at if they’ve prepared properly too.”
