Mark Applegarth explains shock Luke Gale transfer

One of the biggest transfers of the season has been confirmed tonight as former Man of Steel with Castleford Tigers and Leeds Rhinos captain Luke Gale on a deal until the end of the 2024 season.

Many are flabbergasted by the transfer with Wakefield having Mason Lino, Lee Gaskell and Morgan Smith at the club whilst Rowan Milnes joined recently on loan.

However, coach Mark Applegarth has explained the shock transfer.

“I am delighted we have secured Luke until the end of the 2024 season,” he said on the club’s website.

“We have brought him in to direct the team around the field and bring some leadership alongside Mason. He is a player who has been at the top and knows what it takes to play at this level and get results consistently.

“We believe that Luke will play a vital role at the club over the next 18 months as we rebuild the playing group, leading some of the younger players around the field.

“I am looking forward to working with him and we thank Keighley for their cooperation.”

Gale’s first task will be to stop the club suffering relegation.

He has himself been relegated from Super League in the past with the Bradford Bulls.

Wakefield are without a win so far this season and Gale will be hoping to deliver a win sooner rather than later.

A big game will be the contest against his former club Hull FC.
