Marc Sneyd’s future – ‘huge’ Hull FC decision, Leigh admission, ‘damage integrity’ Super League claim

Salford's Marc Sneyd.

Round-up on the latest surrounding Marc Sneyd’s future amid recent speculation regarding the playmaker and his team, Salford Red Devils.

Salford fire sale impacting Marc Sneyd

Marc Sneyd’s future has been a hot topic in recent weeks, with reports of Salford Red Devils requiring a fire sale in order to balance their books.

It is believed that the Red Devils must cut their costs by around £700,000, as reported by Examiner Live, leading to plenty of speculation regarding their star players.

Captain Kallum Watkins, Deon Cross, Nene Macdonald and Tim Lafai are among those to have interested suitors, as reported by Love Rugby League, as well as experienced half-back Sneyd.

The two-time England international has reportedly had at least three clubs interested in his services, with his current contract at the Salford Stadium set to run until the end of the 2026 season.

Leigh Leopards salary cap space

Leigh Leopards currently have salary cap space available ahead of the forthcoming Super League campaign, although head of rugby Chris Chester opted not to comment on links with the 33-year-old when recently speaking with Serious About RL.

Australian Matt Moylan announced his retirement from the professional game last October after just one season in Super League, with Sneyd a potential replacement for the former New South Wales representative. As things stand, Gareth O’Brien and Lachlan Lam look likely to link up in the halves under Adrian Lam.

“I get sent stuff every other day with players who we’re linked with,” Chester previously told Serious About RL. “All I will say is that we have salary cap space available if the right person becomes available.

“I don’t want to talk about any other club’s players, everybody is well aware of what that situation is there [at Salford]. All I’m focused on is what we’ve got at this moment in time and what we have available for round one.”

Sneyd to Hull FC?

Hull Live have reported that Hull FC recently launched a move for their former half-back, putting in a ‘huge bid’ for their two-time Challenge Cup winner.

According to the same publication, the Black and Whites recently parted ways with new recruit Jordan Abdull with the season just weeks away, and will be looking for a replacement in the halves with salary cap space available.

Sneyd made 176 appearances for the MKM Stadium outfit between 2015 and 2021, winning at Wembley back-to-back in 2016 and 2017, named the Lance Todd Trophy winner on both occasions.

Love Rugby League also reported in December that Hull KR enquired about Sneyd’s availability upon first reports of Salford’s financial issues, although those speculations have gone quiet in recent weeks, with the 2024 Grand Finalists confirming their squad numbers mid-December, with reigning Man of Steel Mikey Lewis, Tyrone May and Danny Richardson all signed up.

Sneyd continues to be one of the finest half-backs in the top flight with his management and kicking game, and has been an influential member of Paul Rowley’s side across the last three seasons, reaching the play-offs on two occasions.

He would add plenty of experience to most Super League clubs if the Red Devils are forced to sell, with Leigh and Hull FC the likely suitors due to salary cap.

Dispensations latest

Matt Shaw revealed on Tuesday: “Super League clubs have voted against proposals to grant clubs player dispensations to sign Salford Red Devils players – despite the fact Salford were among the clubs to vote in favour of the dispensations.”

Serious About Rugby League confirmed this with the RFL and as we wrote this evening: “Clubs met on Tuesday and were provided an update on the financial situation at Salford Red Devils after the club were granted £500,000 of central funding in advance back in November.

“The RFL have now confirmed that no such changes will be made to salary cap regulations meaning that financial dispensations are out of the question.”
