Marc Sneyd gives Warrington Wolves debut verdict with “big question” addressed

Warrington Wolves Marc Sneyd

Marc Sneyd made an instant impact on his Warrington Wolves debut as Wire beat St Helens 14-12 and the England international has given his verdict.

In one of the biggest mid-season signings in Super League in recent years, Warrington were able to pick up last year’s Man of Steel nominee Marc Sneyd to partner George Williams in the halves and it’s fair to say that the early signs are that they’ve hit gold.

Sneyd, who had been involved in just two sessions with his new teammates, orchestrated as we’ve seen him do for the past few years with his kicking game and execution on the final play proving the difference in the narrow win.

Moreover, his actual boot helped secured the points as his three from three record from the tee ensured the two point margin of victory, much to the delight of Sam Burgess who labelled him as “brilliant” when speaking post-match to Sky Sports.

Sneyd joined Burgess in that interview and was asked how he felt he had fared on his debut, with the playmaker strangely admitting that he preferred that type of victory to a blowout.

“Yeah, it was a good one,” he said of his first efforts in a Wire shirt.

“I was just saying to George then that I prefer them games to the 50-0s, when you’re on the right side of them, anyway.

“It was a proper battle as it always is when you come to Saints. It’s a really good feeling getting my first game in this shirt, and what a way to start. I enjoyed it.”

What made his performance more remarkable was the fact that he’d had just one proper training day with his Warrington teammates, something that suggests there is plenty more to come from him in a Wolves shirt this year.

Sneyd explained: “We’ve had one full training day and then captain’s run yesterday so really not too much but we obviously watch a lot of rugby.

“I know exactly how George plays and I’ve been trying to figure out a way to stop him playing like that for a long time so it’s really good to be on that side of it and help him, help him find space so he can do what he does.”

Such a seamless transition into an already strong team could tee the Wolves up for a trophy charge in 2025 and Sneyd was asked just how much more there is to come from him, and his Warrington teammates, a question which saw him pump the breaks.

“That’s a big question,” he responded

“That’s a ‘wait and see’ isn’t it? We’ve still got a long way to go. I thought tonight was good stepping stone but the more we can get on the training pitch together, get our timings right, and me have an understanding on George on both sides and George getting an understanding of how I’m going to play on the ball as well. So hopefully good times will come, but I won’t jinx it.”

George Williams, who bagged Warrington’s first try after latching onto Sneyd’s clever kick, also spoke to those at Sky Sports with the England captain offering a rave review of his new teammate.

Williams beamed: “Everybody knows how good he is, he’s been around a long, long time, and he’s probably good at everything I’m not- long kicking game, organising, and just allows me to play.

“We’ve had two training sessions together, so not long at all but when you’re natural rugby players, you slide straight in, and we’re only going to get better, hopefully.”
