Marc Sneyd explains Salford Red Devils exit as Warrington Wolves deal confirmed

Salford Red Devils

Warrington Wolves have announced the signing of Salford Red Devils half-back Marc Sneyd on an 18-month contract. Sneyd joins the club immediately for an undisclosed fee and looks set to make his debut for the club next week when Sam Burgess’ side take on St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

For Warrington it’s a move that seems to solve the club’s struggles in the pivots with Oli Leyland and Stefan Ratchford struggling for traction alongside George Williams so far this season and with Leon Hayes injured. For Salford, though, the loss of Sneyd comes as a huge blow as they prepare for their Challenge Cup clash with Bradford Bulls.

In a statement released by Salford, the club claim to have had two approaches for Sneyd this week and after speaking with the England international they opted to agree a deal with Warrington, allowing him to remain close to his home in the north west.

It’s a deal that gives Salford a small amount of breathing space in their bid remain under the salary cap restrictions this week while the wait goes on for the new owners’ finances to drop. They will remain under a sustainability cap until financial progress is made to cement the club’s future.

Sneyd has been with Salford since 2022, making 83 appearances and racking up 844 points in total and after joining Warrington, he had a parting message for the Salford fans.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve had to make the tough decision to leave Salford in pursuit of a new opportunity,” he said in a statement on the Salford Red Devils website. “I want to go on record in thanking everyone who has made returning here so memorable and wish the Club nothing but the best in the future.

“To the lads – past and present – Paul Rowley and his coaching team, and the backroom staff, it has been a pleasure to play and work alongside you every day – I hope everything works out for everybody.

“A final big thank you to the fans. Your constant support has meant the world and it’s always appreciated whenever I took the field.”

He added to the Warrington site: “Warrington are up there with the top teams in the league and when the opportunity came about to join I had to go for it.

“It’s still really early in the season so I’ve got time to bed in, get to know the lads and get some combinations going. I’m looking to build on my form from last year. It’s been difficult to think about rugby at times in recent months if I’m being honest and I’m looking forward now to rugby being my main focus again.

“George [Williams] gives a lot to the team and I’d like to think I can come in and complement him as best I can. Hopefully I can take a bit of the pressure off him as well. The better positions I can put George in, the better the team will be.”

There’s got to be a fair sized protest before/during the game to force the Salford club to come out and tell the truth; they can’t keep hiding behind these NDAs. It’s now gone on long enough. These investors are making Salford RL and the RFL look like stupid amateurs.

Nothing new there mate, RFL have been amateurs for tens of years. Can’t wait for NRL to take them over.
