Magic Weekend Referee Appointments: Liam Moore and Aaron Moore set to make history

Aaron and Liam Moore will make history as the first brothers to take charge of Betfred Super League fixtures on the same Magic Weekend, with Liam appointed for the mouthwatering Saturday afternoon clash between Wigan Warriors and Catalans Dragons before Aaron makes his Magic debut in the Wakefield Trinity versus Leigh Leopards clash which kicks off Sunday’s action.

Ben Thaler has been appointed as video referee for that Wakefield-Leigh game, which will follow his role as match referee for the Leeds Rhinos v Castleford Tigers derby that rounds off Saturday’s action.

That will maintain a remarkable record for the most experienced member of the RFL’s full-time panel, of having been a referee and a video referee at each of the 16 Magic Weekends since the concept was launched in Cardiff in 2007.

“I refereed Salford v Warrington, the second game on the Sunday, in that first Millennium Magic,” he recalled. “And I was video ref for St Helens v Wigan on the Saturday night. It’s always a great weekend to be part of.”

At the other end of the experience scale, an all-female officiating team has been appointed to take charge of the inspiresport Champion Schools Final that kicks off the action on Saturday morning.

Niamh Bragg, Rebecca Floyd, Rhiannon Horsman, Olivia Lloyd, Megan Mills and Esmai Wright will share the officiating duties for the Year 10 Girls’ Final, between Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf of Cardiff and The Brooksbank School of Halifax.
