Super League fans in agreement after major Magic Weekend update

Super League Magic Weekend

It has now been confirmed that Super League’s Magic Weekend will return to St James’ Park in 2025, after a brief hiatus.

News of a return to the North East comes after a year of it being in the rugby league heartlands, with Elland Road the choice for 2024.

Elland Road was a largely unpopular choice, and it drew the lowest weekend attendance since 2010 at Murrayfield, as well as the lowest day attendance in the event’s history.

Now, it will be back at Newcastle’s St James’ Park for an eighth time, which is comfortably more editions than any other stadium.

After positively trending attendance figures in both the Super League Grand Final and Challenge Cup final in 2024, there’s hope this announcement will allow the same for this event.

Super League fans agree on major Magic Weekend announcement

The vast, vast majority of supporters seemed happy with the switch, after a year without the weekend away from the heartlands.

In response to a Serious About Rugby League Facebook post, Jeff Ellener said: “It’s the best place for it. Great people, great stadium, great travel system. What more do you want?

Dennis Deluce added: “Absolutely (I’m happy)! Along with the majority of all the other fans.”

Marc Wakeham noted the atmosphere of the event when staged in Newcastle, saying: “Great weekend and everyone talks to each other, plus great to all sit near the Chinese quarter on grass.”

Kevin Stephenson agreed, saying: “I don’t know why the RFL refuse to listen to the fans. Cardiff has a better stadium, and Man City is more central but none of them have the same atmosphere as Newcastle town centre: pubs, and people are fantastic. And is still easily accessible to all , and a proper day or two out.”

Some also used this as another excuse to lament the 2024 edition, with  Jayne Thompson saying: “Yes I certainly am (pleased). I went, but Leeds’ Elland Road stadium simply wasn’t good enough.”

Vixi Tom added: “It was absolutely dire at Elland Road!”
