Luke Robinson gives inside story on when Huddersfield Giants signed Oliver Wilson from Bradford Bulls

Last night Oliver Wilson was outstanding in the middle for Huddersfield as they overran the Rhinos in the middle of the field with ease storming into a 22-0 lead and eventually to a 30-16 triumph over their West Yorkshire rivals.

After the game, assistant coach Luke Robinson who stepped in for the isolating Ian Watson last night, couldn’t praise the prop enough.

He even suggested that a full England call up can’t be far off: “He’s so aggressive and I don’t think you can teach that. A lot of the time, middles don’t flourish until their late 20 and he’s in his early 20s and they can’t put him down. He’s so strong and really awkward with the ball. For me he’s a sure pick for England Knights and if he keeps playing the way he is he’ll surely knock on the first team door.”

He also revealed the instrumental role he played in getting Wilson to join the Giants.

The 22-year-old joined the Giants in 2019 and has gone from strength since trading Bradford for Huddersfield and it transpires that Robinson was crucial in getting him to the John Smith’s Stadium.

Robinson said: “I coached Yorkshire Under 18s and after I came in and said to our CEO there’s a kid there we need to get hold of. Sorry Bradford fans.”

He has been one of the league’s best props so far this season and has, like Owen Trout and Joe Greenwood, developed massively under Ian Watson.
