He was dropped by his head coach in last week’s defeat to St Helens, but Luke Gale isn’t a man to just roll over.
The halfback is well known for his fiery nature on the field as well as his determination to lead by example for those around him.
And, having been made captain of Hull FC by head coach Brett Hodgson prior to the season starting, Gale was expected to play a huge role in the Black and Whites’ charge to the top.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t panned out that way with Gale receiving two suspensions which have amounted to seven games being sat on the sidelines and his absence against Saints was evidence that Hodgson wants him to step it up.
And, for Hull legend Paul Cooke that’s exactly what he should do.
“Brett Hodgson decided to drop Luke Gale last week and it’s a decision I can cop,” Cooke said in his Hull Daily Mail column.
“What Hodgson said was right, Reynolds had a dig against Catalans and performed, but if I’m Luke Gale I’m thinking this isn’t a good situation.
“He should be p***** off, I’d be thinking if I was at a level of performance I would be back in.
“So I’d take it as a challenge and I wouldn’t be kicking stones, it’s a term I always used in coaching when players weren’t in the team.”
It remains to be seen whether Gale will return for Hull’s clash against Wigan Warriors on Saturday, but he will be keen to put things right if so.
