London Broncos release statement to address name change reports

London Broncos

London Broncos insist that no decision has been made on their rebrand, despite recent reports.

The Broncos are to change their name as they step into what promises to be a bright new era under the guidance of Leeds Rhinos CEO Gary Hetherington, who announced his vision for the London club last month.

According to All Out Rugby League, that name will be ‘London Hounds’, with the report revealing that a trademark has been registered with the domain name spotted online.

The Hounds moniker would be unique to professional rugby league of course, with the Broncos name being associated to the NRL outfit based in Brisbane. Therefore a rebrand makes sense for the club, who are currently struggling at the bottom end of the table and are in desperate need of investment, both on and off the field.

However, the Broncos have released a statement to deny reports that a decision has been made on the change to the Hounds, despite admitting that the name has been ‘recommended and registered’.

London Broncos release statement

“Following recent reports in the media London Broncos would like to clarify that no decision has been made in regard to any name change,” the statement read.

“Gary Hetherington has recently spoken openly about ongoing discussion and research about a possible rebrand however no such decision will be made until an ownership group is in place.

““The Hounds” is a name that has been recommended and registered although we reiterate that no decision has been made.

“As soon as the club is in a position to update fans with any news this will be announced accordingly through the official channels.”

The Broncos currently sit second bottom of the Championship table having won just two games all season under Mike Eccles. As such, it’s fair to say the club’s return to the second tier has been a difficult one, but with incoming investment and a fresh identity, the hope will be that London can become candidates for Super League once more in the not too distant future.
