London Broncos chief teases ‘positive news’ and confirms latest ‘quality’ signing

London Broncos Mike Eccles - Wigan Warriors pair join

London Broncos head coach Mike Eccles has teased that ‘positive news’ about the future of the club will be announced in the not too distant future. Eccles also confirmed that the club have made another high quality signing in the build up to next weekend’s Challenge Cup second round tie with Goole Vikings.

It comes after Rugby league Live reported last week that the club are on the verge of a takeover following David Hughes’ decision to part ways with the club at the end of last season. As such, it seems supporters can look forward to a fresh start under new ownership in the capital as the club prepare to get their Championship season underway.

Eccles has dropped a hint that a significant update could be released before too long and as he prepares his side for their first outing of the year, there’s signs of positivity in the recruitment market, too.

“This whole process will be a slow one,” Eccles told London Broncos’ club media. “We have 13 players signed and the fans will know of 12, we’ve just signed another very quality player.

“He’s been training today and been in with us and will be announced Monday. We have to recruit quality and it will be slow, we know we’re at the back of the queue in terms of player availability particularly in this country. We’ll look at what we can over here and also overseas.”

He continued: “I’m confident that we can do it, I’m happy that we’re here and it’s going to be exciting. In the coming weeks we’ll have positive news in terms of the club which we have to stay tightlipped on right now but it’s important that we build properly.

“With recruitment it is ongoing. We are actively looking now and there was a period where we weren’t actively looking so it’s certainly a positive for us.”

London were due to be in friendly action this weekend with a clash against North Wales Crusaders lined up. However, water outages in Wales saw the game cancelled, ensuring the Broncos will take on Goole next week without the benefit of a match under their belts.

“It wasn’t meant to be,” Eccles added. “The game was on, it was off, on, off kind of three or four times and it got to 8pm last night and the decision was made that we wouldn’t travel.

“We needed that game to be fair as well, the more established players needed that game and it would have been a good game to see the trialists and make some decisions on them. We’ve made the most of it and we’ve had a decent hit out behind closed doors today. We’ve done what we can to prepare for the game next week.”
