New London Broncos cross-code signing Huw Worthington has explained his eagerness to switch from rugby union to league.
Worthington signed for the 2025 season after training with the side for a period in 2024, and previously trained with Leeds Rhinos too.
At 30 years old, he only has two years of experience playing the game in the UK, first with Widnes Vikings in 2023 then Whitehaven last season, when he made 20 RFL Championship appearances, showing that he is at least used to the league that the Broncos have returned to.
He made his first appearances for Wales in October this year, against Jamaica, Serbia and France – and he scored twice across those three games.
While playing union, he was known for his ability with the ball, and his try-scoring exploits despite being a forward.
London Broncos signing explains why he switched from union to rugby league
Speaking to club media, Worthington explained why he started in union, and why he switched to league.
He said: “I’m from quite a rugby union sort of area in North Wales, so that’s what I grew up doing. I thought about switching numerous amount of times, but probably just wasn’t brave enough.
“During Covid, I just decided right as soon as the borders were kind of opening to Australia, I wanted to travel a little bit, but I wanted to learn to play. So in early 2022, I moved out to Australia. I was lucky, probably landed on my feet a bit.”
His time there saw him gain some incredible experience, he explained: “I played with a club called Glebe Dirty Reds with Ethan Natoli last year, so I knew him.
“It went really quickly from there, so I played out the end of the season in 2022 and I was lucky enough to play for the Roosters in the New South Wales Cup, so I had a really good start to my career as such. Then when I came back, I ended up at Leeds and at Widnes for a bit, and Whitehaven last year after training here – so it’s yeah kind of gone full circle in the past year.
“It’s probably taken me a year or two to really get to grips with not just the rules, but the speed of the game – but thankfully, I think last year did me a world of good so I’m ready to really kick on this year hopefully.”
He’ll surely be hoping to help the Broncos towards the RFL Championship title in 2025.
