Reports Down Under have suggested that former St Helens man and South Sydney Rabbitohs’ star signing Lewis Dodd could be kept out of the team by a “little-known” youngster.

Lewis Dodd was announced as the star signing to try and take South Sydney Rabbitohs forward with the ex-St Helens man’s deal confirmed in the middle of a huge rut for the Bunnies.

He arrives at the club after one of their worst seasons in recent memory with Souths placing 16th on the ladder, only ahead of Wooden Spoon winners Wests Tigers.

Much has been made of Dodd’s move given the fact he hails from Super League and the fact he was dropped by St Helens in periods last year, however, with star playmaker Cody Walker set to miss the trials through injury it was assumed Dodd would be able to cement his place in the team.

However, new reports have suggested that might not be the case with Wide World of Sports reporting that those inside the building at Souths are touting a “little-known” junior to potentially “beat Dodd to the punch”.

The player in question is Jamie Humphreys who signed in the off-season from Manly Sea Eagles having played just one game in the NRL.

He’s only a year younger than Dodd at 22 but came with far less fanfare meaning it would be a major shock externally for him to get the start, however, that is now seemingly possible.

WWOS argue that it could be one of Wayne Bennett’s “daring gambles” with Humphreys’ one game of NRL experience potentially giving him the advantage over Dodd who has only ever played for St Helens in Super League.

It’s expected that both men could play in this weekend’s first trial game whilst Souths also have Super League-linked man Jayden Sullivan as an option too.

However, only one of that trio will start the season alongside Cody Walker who will reportedly be fit for Round One meaning that there is a true battle for the shirt between Dodd, Humphreys and Sullivan.
