Liam Sutcliffe has his say on Leeds Rhinos’ Boxing Day friendlies

In the past, when rugby league was played in the winter like rugby union and football, league games on Boxing Day were a common occurrence.

But the summer era saw the end of this as festive friendlies took their place but even these are a dying bread.

This year there will only be Leeds Rhinos clash with Wakefield Trinity which happens every year and Batley Bulldogs’ derby with Dewsbury Rams.

But what do players think about playing over the Christmas period?

Liam Sutcliffe who is now enjoying a Christmas break at Hull FC having traditionally played the Boxing Day friendly for Leeds, had his say on the club’s website:

“I’m really excited for the Christmas break! I’ve never really had this time of the year off before,” he said.

“At Leeds, we played on Boxing Day pretty much every year in a friendly with Wakefield.“So I’ve never really had the full Christmas period off. I’m really looking forward to having a bit of down time over the next couple of weeks.

“Obviously, I will still be doing my own little bits from home to make sure I don’t lose too much ground, but it will be really nice to have a bit of time off and spend lots of time with my family.”
