“Let’s be honest…” – Barrie McDermott has blunt say on controversial forward pass call

As Warrington Wolves and St Helens collided last night on Sky Sports there were some huge moments and brilliant play in the game of the night despite interesting clashes between Wakefield Trinity and Wigan Warriors as well as the meeting between Castleford Tigers and Leigh Leopards.

Earlier in the first half we saw some exquisite breaks from the electric Matt Dufty as Warrington started well.

Matty Ashton made a brilliant break himself and would later notch a try that would cancel out a brilliant score from Mark Percival who cut a line that sliced through the Wolves masterfully.

Saints would take the lead with a brilliant try with an inside ball from Lewis Dodd to Jack Welsby who found Johnny Lomax who put in James Bell.

However, Warrington fans felt the initial pass to Welsby was forward.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Barrie McDermott had his say on the inicdent.

“They have done very well. They have defended, well and stood their ground.

“And let’s be fair they have only been unpicked by one bad defensive misread and let’s be honest a forward pass.

“It was forward every day of the week.”

Jon Wilkin meanwhile said: “It was forward wasn’t it.

“It’s closer than it actually looks. There are two factors, Jack Welsby cuts under and Lewis Dodd is falling but it is forward.”

But he felt the Wolves should have concentrated more on defending the play rather than the pass:

“Warrington could have defended that but they have let the forward pass be the defining factor.

“Saints just got on with it.”
