Hull KR went top of Super League with a resounding 36-4 win over Catalans Dragons at Magic Weekend but the game was marred after an allegation was made by Robins star Mikey Lewis that Cesar Rouge bit him.
The alleged incident occurred just before the hour mark when the Robins were leading 22-4 with a melee in the middle of the park leading to Lewis making the formal complaint.
Referee Tom Grant placed the incident on report with Lewis showing his hand to the official, stating: “You can see it (bite mark) there, it’s clear as day.”
Lewis has now given his official verdict when speaking on Sky Sports after the game with the playmaker quizzed on the incident as well as his below-par day from the tee.
He only managed to kick two of the eight conversions, leaving 12 points on the board but such was Hull KR’s dominance that it didn’t matter on the day.
Despite that, he promised it would be his focus for next week, explaining: “I work hard on it and sometimes it just doesn’t go your way. It’s just one of those days, I’ll go away, it’s not the end of it. I’ll keep working on it and next week will be different.”
Hull KR star Mikey Lewis explains bite allegations
Having discussed the fact he’d left his kicking boots at home, Brian Carney asked the Hull KR talisman about the alleged incident with Cesar Rouge.
Lewis explained: “I’m trying to look after Jez because me and him are very close and I’m trying to push him (Cesar Rouge) off and my hand’s ended up there. It’s in his mouth and then he’s bit down.
“I’ll let the RFL do their bit”, Lewis concluded.
Record-low attendance recorded on day two of Super League Magic Weekend
Pushed again on the matter, Lewis came out swinging and doubled down on the allegation.
“I’m trying to push him away. I’ve pushed his face away and the fingers got in his mouth and he’s bit down.
“Rugby league is a tough enough sport as it is and to bite in it as well. It’s not in the game, and like I said, I’m not going to say anything more than that. I’ll let the RFL do it, and what will be will be. I’ll just move on now.”
It’s an incident that will be reviewed by the Match Review Panel that meets tomorrow.
