Wakefield Trinity locked in a crucial home play-off tie after grinding out a tense victory over Leigh Leopards at the Leigh Sports Village, meaning Leigh must now travel straight back to Bellevue next week for a quickfire rematch.

In a tightly fought, physical encounter where defence dominated for long periods, Daryl Powell’s men showed incredible resolve to hold off the host side.

The result guarantees Trinity a prized top-four spot and ensures the two sides will do it all over again in West Yorkshire for the opening round of the play-offs.

Tom Johnstone gave Wakefield complete early dominance by crossing for a brace of tries, while Max Jowitt added two penalty goals before Jake Trueman slotted a drop goal right on the stroke of half-time to establish a 13-0 lead.

Wakefield Trinity will host their eliminator clash next week, when Leigh Leopards will be forced to take the hard road away from home in the knockout stages.

Discipline and yellow card drama

Discipline was at a premium during a fiery, high-stakes encounter.

Leigh repeatedly invited pressure by conceding key penalties in dangerous territory, while Wakefield half-back Mason Lino was sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul during a tense second-half stretch.

Head injury forces lengthy stoppage

A heavy collision brought play to a halt early in the second half following a severe head knock to Jayden Myers. The young Wakefield winger failed his HIA and was ruled out for the remainder of the night, putting him into mandatory concussion protocols ahead of the play-offs.
