St Helens travel to Leigh Leopards this evening knowing a win would be enough to secure a home tie in the first week of the Super League play-offs.
The Saints haven’t mathematically guaranteed their spot in the top six yet, but it would take a near impossible swing in points difference for them to miss out at this point. As such, with Salford Red Devils falling short in a one-sided manner at Wigan Warriors, they have the opportunity to finish fourth in the table.
Leigh haven’t secured their spot in the play-offs either and they need a result to make sure of their place. Adrian Lam’s side are sixth at present, but with Catalans Dragons and Leeds Rhinos just a point behind, a loss against St Helens would leave them vulnerable.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the team news going into the clash.
Leigh Leopards team news
It’s probably fair to say Lam is going into this game with a full strength squad at his disposal, with Edwin Ipape returning from injury in time to be involved in the must win fixture. The hooker was missed last time out but he should be fit to start tonight.
The Leopards have every right to approach tonight’s game with confidence, then.
Leigh Leopards 21-man squad: Gareth O’Brien, Zak Hardaker, Ricky Leutele, Josh Charnley, Matt Moylan, Lachlan Lam, Tom Amone, Edwin Ipape, Robbie Mulhern, Kai O’Donnell, Jack Hughes, Josh Asiata, Matt Davis, Frankie Halton, Owen Trout, Ollie Homes, Keanan Brand, Umyla Hanley, Brad Dwyer, Darnell McIntosh, Aaron Pene
St Helens team news
The Saints aren’t in bad shape either heading into the final round of fixtures. Wellens welcomed five players back into the fold last week ahead of their win over Castleford Tigers and Moses Mbye returns after a one-match ban this time around, but the playmker is carrying a slight issue and remains a doubt.
There’s a few missing, though. Curtis Sironen would undoubtedly have been involved if he was fit, but a calf issue sees him sidelined. Jake Wingfield and Konrad Hurrell have both been ruled out for the season, too.
Harry Robertson isn’t involved and hasn’t been seen since limping out of the clash with Warrington Wolves with a knee injury, but Wellens confirmed he was fit for selection last week.
St Helens 21-man squad: Jack Welsby, Tommy Makinson, Waqa Blake, Mark Percival, Jon Bennison, Jonny Lomax, Lewis Dodd, Alex Walmsley, Daryl Clark, Matty Lees, Sione Mata’utia, Joe Batchelor, Morgan Knowles, Moses Mbye, Agnatius Paasi, Matt Whitley, George Delaney, Ben Davies, Jake Burns, Jonny Vaughan, Noah Stephens.
