Leigh Leopards v St Helens injury news as 7 out and 2 big returns

St Helens player Tommy Makinson celebrates after scoring a try.

The head coaches of Leigh Leopards and St Helens have named their 21-man squads ahead of their clash on Friday night.

Oliver Holmes and Ben McNamara remain out through injury.

Last week, Adrian Lam said: “I know Oli Holmes is now running on the field with Ben McNamara, so both those players are probably a week away now, so we’ll be potentially in contention for the St Helens game next week.”

However, neither have made it into the squad.

Tom Amone suffered a cut to the head in the last game but is named in the 21-man squad here and is expected to be in contention for the game.

Matt Davis, however, doesn’t play in this one – which was mandatory, as he failed an HIA in the last game.

Josh Charnley also makes it into the squad again after a brief injury layoff – he started on the wing last time out after two weeks out injured, scoring a try in the process.

St Helens, meanwhile, have Tommy Makinson and Matt Whitley back.

Makinson had been out since Saints played London Broncos last month due to a foot injury, and the four games since have all resulted in defeats for Wellens’ side.

Whitley also returns after around two months off, as he picked up a shoulder injury in a clash with Hull KR in May.

Morgan Knowles, Joe Batchelor and Alex Walmsley could also be set to return in the coming weeks, meaning this Saints squad will be looking a lot stronger for the end-of-season run-in, barring fresh injury concerns.

As well as Makinson and Whitley, young Leon Cowen comes into the squad, while dropping out are Jake Burns, Tee Ritson and Owen Dagnall.

Cowen played four games on loan for Swinton this season and could make his Super League debut on Friday night.

Still also out are Jake Wingfield, Sione Mata’utia and Konrad Hurrell, who likely won’t return this season with his neck injury.
