On the eve of Leigh Leopards’ play-off clash with Salford Red Devils, major reports that Matt Moylan could retire have emerged.
The Australian signed for the Leopards ahead of the 2024 season and has had a solid campaign, playing in both the halves and at full-back, and although he is contracted through till the end of 2025 it’s reported that he will call time and leave at the end of the current season.
That could be as early as tonight effectively with Leigh travelling to face Salford Red Devils in the first round of the Super League play-offs. A loss would end the Leopards’ season and reportedly Moylan’s career, per reports down under.
The Daily Telegraph have reported that the 33-year-old is “set to retire at the end of the season” with a return to Australia ‘expected’, albeit not a playing one.
It would be a huge blow for Leigh to lose a key spine player for the 2025 season with the club already losing overseas stars such as John Asiata, Tom Amone, Kai O’Donnell and Ricky Leutele.
Leigh Leopards star reportedly set to retire
Moylan was the major name that Leigh recruited for the 2025 season with the club not making too many other signings but in Moylan, they had their star. He penned a two-year deal with the Leopards but per these reports, he may not fulfil that second year.
A one-time Australia representative and a member of the 2016 New South Wales side, Moylan’s arrival at Leigh was one that showed serious intent from Leigh. It signified a team that were not prepared to remain stagnant after their incredible 2023 season.
Early doors, Moylan’s move looked to have been miscalculated with the 191-game NRL veteran struggling in the opening weeks of Super League, but that was a team-wide problem as Leigh Leopards won just one game in their opening seven.
When it did click though, the Leopards were on fire and they have ended the season with 11 wins in 13 and Moylan has been the anchor of that team, moving to full-back where his attacking threat has been much more devastating.
A shakey performance under the high ball against Hull KR was certainly a blip but the Australian has been one of Leigh’s best this year so news of his reported retirement is a shock.
Leigh already have plenty of quota spots for 2025 with so many departing overseas players but it could be that another one opens up if Moylan does call time on his career.
