Leigh Leopards star excited by signings but they leave him with a battle for a starting spot

Rumour mill

Leigh Leopards have made a number of brilliant signings going into the 2023 Super League season.

They’ve made 12 signings including Warrington Wolves quintet Oliver Holmes, Jack Hughes, Rob Mulhern, Matt Davis and Jacob Gannon, Leeds Rhinos duo Zak Hardaker and Tom Briscoe as well Castleford Tigers’ Gareth O’Brien and Newcastle Thunder’s Nathan Wilde.

Perhaps their biggest signing powerful centre Ricky Leutele from Huddersfield Giants. That said, despite his arrival, the Leopards already had two top centres in Nene MacDonald and Ed Chamberlain.

This means that the three will have to fight it out for the two centre spots but this doesn’t seem to be phasing the Irish international whose Rugby League World Cup campaign came to an end against New Zealand this week.

Speaking on the club’s YouTube channel, Chamberlian said: “It’ll be good, met up with a couple of new lads when I was in Leeds. Robbie Mulhern was in the camp and ended up meeting a few of the other Warrington Wolves lads who have joined.

“I’m really excited to work alongside them. I’ll give my body some time to recover and come back into pre-season and hopefully make a good start to Super League.”

It’ll be interesting to see who Leigh’s starting centres are when Round One comes around and their opening opponents will be revealed on Thursday.
