It’s clear that Leigh Leopards will look very different heading into the 2025 Super League season.
Ahead of the current season, Matt Moylan was the headline name signed as the Leopards looked to build on a successful 2023.
Another quota player, Ben Nakubuwai, was loaned to Featherstone until the end of the year when his Leigh contract ends – allowing Aaron Pene to join the club mid-season.
Currently, clubs can have a maximum of seven ‘non-Federation trained players’ in their squad – and these players are defined as those that didn’t play three seasons of rugby in Europe before they turned 21.
These rules are much more relaxed than previous rules, which were at one point to only allow three foreign players in most English sides.
Leigh Leopards’ quota situation for 2025 ahead of major shake-up
It has already been confirmed that John Asiata will be playing for Hull FC next season, with the club captain lining up for a second Super League team in 2025.
Also leaving is Tom Amone, who has signed a two-year deal with Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in a return to NRL.
Although he was signed on for next year, Kai O’Donnell has also signed an NRL deal for next year, heading to North Queensland Cowboys.
Ricky Leutele is also off-contract at the end of the year, but it’s unclear where he will be playing it 2025, with nothing yet confirmed.
However, joining the side for next year will be David Armstrong, a full-back signed on a three-year deal.
This means the Leopards could have three quota spots available to use up over the off-season.
However, remaining at the club through 2025 are Edwin Ipape and Matt Moylan, while the longest contracted quota player is Aaron Pene, who could stay until the end of 2026.
