Leigh Leopards quota situation explained after squad number question

Leigh Leopards have confirmed their squad numbers for 2025 with the announcement also providing another major update.

The Leopards became the 11th Super League side to confirm their squad numbers for the 2025 season and there has been plenty of change given the huge number of outgoing and incoming players at Leigh.

A new leadership group has been confirmed after the departure of captain John Asiata with Jack Hughes, Lachlan Lam, Robbie Mulhern and Isaac Liu named to that.

However, one of the major updates from the squad announcement would be that Leigh Leopards are full on their overseas quota.

It had been believed that Leigh was one of just several Super League clubs with a quota spot available given the shock retirement of Matt Moylan at the end of last season.

That is not the case and Serious About RL is able to confirm that Leigh’s overseas quota is full once more as they head into the 2025 campaign, with Fijian international Ben Nakubuwai taking the number 25 for the 2025 Super League season.

Nakubuwai headed to Featherstone Rovers on loan for much of the 2024 season which allowed Leigh to bring in Aaron Pene and operate with seven quota players, however, it was widely believed that the Fijian was off contract at the end of the 2024 season.

The forward’s presence at the club ensures Leigh are one of nine Super League clubs approaching the new season with a full quota, with Huddersfield Giants, Wakefield Trinity and Wigan Warriors, following Willie Isa’s decision to retire, being the only clubs with space to recruit talent from Down Under as it stands.

The Leopards’ squad number reveal also confirmed Gaz O’Brien as their number six. Coupling that with confirmation of a full quota seems to suggest that no more efforts to replace Matt Moylan will be made.
