Leigh Leopards’ off-season recruit joins Championship club in season-long loan

Leigh Leopards have confirmed their decision to allow off-season recruit Brad Martin to join Championship side Sheffield Eagles on loan. Martin joins the Eagles on a deal until the end of the season after failing to catch the eye of Leigh boss Adrian Lam so far this season.

As it stands he has not made a single first-team appearance for the club he joined over the winter from Castleford Tigers. Martin, who spent a month on loan at Batley Bulldogs earlier in the season, played 39 games for Castleford before penning a two-year deal with the Leopards.

As such, he’ll be keen to impress with the Eagles and eventually return to the Super League club in a better position to compete for a spot in the side.

Leigh Leopards’ Brad Martin signs for Sheffield Eagles on loan

“We’ve decided to let Brad go out on loan to Sheffield to get first team experience there,” Leigh Leopards’ director of rugby Chris Chester said.

“It’s similar to Ryan Brown and Kavan Rothwell who are both first team squad members currently on season long loans at Barrow Raiders, where both are enjoying their rugby, getting games in and playing well. Long term our club will benefit from the experience they are getting.

“At this stage in Brad’s career playing games is vital so joining Sheffield will give him this opportunity in a good environment in an excellent competition.

“We wish Brad every success and shall be monitoring his progress at the Eagles.”

Martin made his Super League debut with Castleford in 2020, as the Tigers saw off Hull KR behind closed doors and he went on to play something of a bit part role at Wheldon Road. His final season with the club saw him make nine appearances for Craig Lingard’s side and he links up with the head coach once more in South Yorkshire.
