Leigh Leopards launch comeback to beat Warrington Wolves in Toby King’s testimonial

Leigh Leopards left it late as they came from behind to beat Warrington Wolves in Toby King’s testimonial game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Adrian Lam’s side defeated their hosts 20-12 with Leigh scoring three tries in the final 15 minutes to secure the win, marking the end of the Leopards’ pre-season.

As for Warrington, it meant that pre-season ended with two defeats after Wire failed to beat Widnes earlier in January when fielding a very young squad, however, all attention will now turn to the Challenge Cup and imminent Super League season.

Warrington named a large bench but their starting XIII was effectively the strongest that they could play as they went all out to honour centre Toby King in his testimonial game.

As for Leigh, they had more stars missing with wingers Josh Charnley and Darnell McIntosh out but most notable was Edwin Ipape with the hooker facing a race to be fit for the Super League season.

One of those who deputised on the wing was former Castleford Tigers youngster Bailey Hodgson and the Leopards’ new signing opened the scoring for Leigh when he crossed over after just four minutes.

Warrington hit back through England star Matty Ashton as Wire’s left edge got firing with Ollie Leyland’s kick adding the two to make it 6-6 after a quarter of an hour.

There would be no more scores in the first half meaning the sides went in at the break level, something Warrington changed on the hour mark when Jake Thewlis scored in the corner.

Leyland added the extras again to make it 12-6 but Leigh found a second win in the final fifteen minutes as they scored three tries to secure the victory.

Leigh signing Andrew Badrock scored first before Keanan Brand and Nathan Wilde bagged scores to make it 20-12, handing the Leopards the win in front of almost 7,000 fans at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Next up for both sides are trips to Cumbria in the Challenge Cup with Warrington travelling to Whitehaven whilst Leigh will make the journey to face Workington Town.
