Leigh Leopards halfback Lachlan Lam believes Leigh couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season.
Lam has started off the season as brightly as he finished 2024 with three solid performances with him organising their attack.
Speaking to Sky Sports after their 34-6 win over Catalans Dragons, he shared his thoughts on Leigh’s spine, their defensive displays and the younger players in the squad stepping up.
Lam said: “Obviously, with David Armstrong not playing, our spine had a little bit of an extra role to play.
“As we’ve seen in the first couple of games, he’s electric and he’s a big part of our attack, so we had to adapt to that on the run and the boys did that.”
Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin was full of praise for Leigh’s spine, saying that they move so well together as one unit.
Whilst it’s Leigh’s attack that’s getting all of the headlines, Lam said that it was their defence that brings them the most pride.
He added: “It’s what we’ve been building our season off so far.
“I think we haven’t started the year great in the last couple of seasons in the Super League so I think to right that wrong, we’ve had to work on our defence.
“I think the boys have done a good job for each other.”
Whilst he was full of praise for the youngsters taking the chances, the Leigh Leopards halfback himself got four try assists during their victory.
On Leigh’s younger players, he said: “Bails (Hodgson) has had a massive pre-season.
“I think he’s been in the top couple of trainers throughout pre-season.
“It was really exciting for him to get his chance last week on the wing and to have a crack at fullback tonight, which I think is his preferred position.
Jon Wilkin also commented on Leigh’s fitness levels across the park but noted that their back three of Bailey Hodgson, AJ Towse and Keenan Brad looked electric.
In response, Lam said: “I obviously did the PNG stuff over the off-season and when I came back, I was a couple of steps behind the pace, which isn’t too usual for me.
“It’s a credit to the boys like Umyla, who put in so much effort during the off-season and into the pre-season as well as Bailey and AJ Towse, it’s exciting for us.”
Leigh travel to Hull FC next Thursday at 8pm in round four of the 2025 Super League season.
