Leigh Leopards owner has suggested a possible rule change regarding golden point after watching his side beat Wigan Warriors on the opening night of Super League.
Records fell when Wigan and Leigh faced off on Thursday night with Super League seeing its first-ever 0-0 scoreline after 80 minutes.
Of course, Super League has golden point in play meaning the game went to extra-time where Leigh secured the 1-0 victory with Leopards’ playmaker Gareth O’Brien adding another famous drop goal to his catalogue.
That meant that Leigh took the two points back across the borough with the win being their first over Wigan since rebranding as the Leopards and their first in Wigan since 1983.
Obviously, Wigan left the Brick Community Stadium with zero points and that’s something that Leigh owner Derek Beaumont has suggested possibly changing.
As it stands, golden point winners earn the standard two points whilst the losers receive nothing but the Leopards owner has suggested a system whereby a team that loses in golden point still gets to pick up a point.
In effect, that would make every Super League game worth three points as opposed to two but he has reasoned that it’s a just reward for earning a draw after 80 minutes.
Posting on X just after 5 pm on Friday, Beaumont jested: “Jet 2 Leigh 1 Wigan 0,” in reference to the scoreline and the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor Jet 2.
He then added: “On a serious note who agrees that after 80 mins each team should get 1 point and then play for a genuine golden point for the team that takes it so last night leigh have 2 Wigan 1? Rewards a close fight rather than a point difference of a blow out?”
Such a change would also mean that Castleford Tigers would have picked up one point for their valiant effort on Friday night at Craven Park as they lost 19-18 to Hull KR in golden point.
Beaumont’s comments set off a debate about the validity of golden point with some fans calling for draws to be reinstated whilst others argued for golden try instead.
Jet 2 leigh 1 Wigan 0 😊
