Super League club Leigh Leopards have confirmed the surprise departure of chairman Mike Latham.

Latham spent 13 years with Leigh, but he has made the decision to step down from his position at the club and bring his time as a member of the Leopards’ hierarchy to an end.

He hasn’t severed ties completely and he will continue to work as the club’s historian and therefore, he can be expected to attend games at Leigh Sports Village. However, for a reasons the Leopards describe as private, Latham will no longer have a say on club operations.

“Leigh Leopards operational board can confirm Mike Latham has stepped down from his role as Chairman, for reasons that he has stated as private, and has asked that this be kept low-key, a request the club is respecting,” a statement released on social media read.

“Mike will continue his unprecedented work as the club historian maintaining his outstanding records of the clubs affairs statistics.

“We thank Mike for his exemplary service to the club over the past thirteen years and ask that his request for privacy is respected.”

Having previously served on the non-executive board, Latham become chairman of Leigh in February 2018 and in that time he has overseen two promotions to Super League and a Challenge Cup win. And, over the last four years, he has played in a role in transforming the club into an elite Super League outfit, with Leigh’s last three seasons ending in the play-offs.
