Leigh Leopards coach still rueing ‘worst call of the season’ and demands change

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has called for a change in the officiating process after what he called one of the worst calls of the season.

He was unhappy with a ‘No Try’ call that denied Darnell McIntosh a second try, and said after the game: “There were a lot of decisions there that were not called for or that were missed and none bigger than Darnell McIntosh’s try.”

McIntosh, after scoring an easy first-half try, was denied a second when the video referee determined his acrobatics hadn’t been enough, and Lam, frustrated, continued: “I thought that was a try every day of the year. A hundred times out of a hundred.”

He went as far as saying he’d speak to the RFL to try to make sure something similar didn’t happen again.

The Leopards did, however, manage to hold on to their lead and defeated Huddersfield Giants 20-16 to move ahead of them.

Now, speaking in Leigh Leopards’ press conference ahead of facing London Broncos on Friday night, Lam has said: “I just thought the Darnell McIntosh try was just a really poor call, one of the worst of the season.

“We want fans to come and watch our wingers score these amazing tries and going up as no try and then finding it no try because it’s gone up as no try.”

He went on to suggest a change in the way officiating decisions are made, and a return to an old rule: “I just think that needs to change in our game.

“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of opinions on it moving forward, but that’s what people want to see.

“If it’s a legal, fair try, maybe don’t go up with a live call or an opinion. Let’s just allow the referee or the third eye to have a look and have an open opinion on that decision.”

Lam will certainly be keeping a close eye on decisions as his side host London Broncos at Leigh Sports Village at 8pm on Friday, 19th July.
