Leigh Leopards boss makes ‘schooled’ admission and calls for attitude swing

Hull KR

Adrian Lam admits his Leigh Leopards side were ‘schooled’ by Hull KR in Sunday’s top of the table clash at Craven Park. The Robins were simply too good for Leigh on the day as they scored five tries to run out 30-0 winners in east Hull and move three points clear at the top of the Super League table.

Oliver Gildart got KR on the scoreboard before Mikey Lewis scored an opportunistic second. That was before Leigh saw a Bailey Hodgson effort ruled out for double movement and on the back of that, the Robins effectively put the game to bed with Kelepi Tanginoa and Lewis scoring before the break.

Tom Davies scored the only try of the game in the second half and while Leigh huffed, puffed and attempted to throw caution to the wind, they barely threatened the home side. As such, it was a frustrating afternoon for the Leopards head coach, who struggled to put his finger on a reason for the drop off.

“It was out of character and very frustrating, disappointing, all those words that we haven’t seen this year,” Lam said after the game. “A lot of learn.

“We’ve done that a couple of times when we’ve come up here, not being us. We were just completely different, nothing of who we are and what we’ve been over the last six or nine months. We’ve been pretty consistent but today we were off.

“I’ve said my piece in the dressing room and I’ll keep that private to the group. I’m just disappointed that there was no identity of us a group.”

The Leigh Leopards boss added: “When you’re playing Hull KR, they’re probably the leading team in the competition, they’ve set the bar in the sense of the rugby as well.

“We just got dominated and schooled in every area. That hasn’t been us and as a new group that will make us better in the long run.”

Leigh won’t have long to lick their wounds with a home game against Wakefield Trinity lined up on Friday night and Lam wants to see an attitude swing from his side.

“We have a five day turnaround and the great thing about rugby league is you get an opportunity to fix things straight away,” he added.

“We’re going to hardly train in the period between now and then, so it won’t be too much coaching, it will just be an attitude swing.”

Asked if his side picked up any injuries, he said: “No, not that I’m aware of. Just to the ego. I think Frankie Halton might be back next week and then the other four boys are potentially available after that.”
