Adrian Lam has praised “legend” Josh Charnley for his incredible form this season, with the Leigh Leopards winger now just two behind Ryan Hall in the all-time Super League try-scoring charts.
Charnley and Hall have been going at it for top spot all through the year, and the gap now sits at just two, which is the closest it has ever been.
With the Leeds Rhinos winger failing to score against Toulouse Olympique on Friday, it presents a real opportunity for Charnley to level or even go ahead of Hall this weekend against Bradford.
Whilst it would be a brilliant achievement, Lam is not focused on getting Charnley the record, though he does admit it would be a nice accolade for his star winger to have.
Speaking to the press this week, he said: “I think the only time I’ve mentioned it is the fact that if we do our job and he gets ball in hand, he’ll do the rest.
“We don’t focus on that because I think that takes the focus away from the team. You get the rewards when we’re playing the system, and everyone’s disciplined in what we do, so I think it’s important.”
Commenting on Charnley as a player and what he has brought to the team, especially in 2026, Lam said: “I think Josh is a legend already, whether he scores and gets in front with the tries or he’s there or there about.
“The boys love him for what he’s doing. He’s playing some great rugby at the moment, he’s running hard and winning his penalties and doing his part and playing a part of the success, so Josh is happy just doing that.
“If we can get him one or two more tries, I think that’ll be handy, so I’ll keep an eye on that.”
At present Hall sits on 271 Super League tries whilst Charnley sits on 269. Leigh take on Bradford Bulls later today, in a game that could see the former Wigan and Warrington winger overtake Hall, should things go his way.
