Leigh Leopards boss comments on Matt Moylan retirement rumours

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has commented on the rumours and reports that playmaker Matt Moylan could retire at the end of the year.

That was something that was initially reported down under with suggestions that the 33-year-old could call time on his playing career and head home to Australia at the conclusion of the current season.

That’s in spite of the fact that he is contracted till the end of the 2025 season after signing a two-year deal ahead of the 2024 campaign.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Moylan was “set to retire at the end of the season” and that was put to Adrian Lam after Leigh Leopards’ impressive 14-6 play-off win, in which Moylan starred.

“No, I think that will be on Matt, he’s cool,” Lam responded when asked if he had conversed with Moylan about the possibility of his retirement.

Elaborating, he explained: “There’s not been much conversation about it. I’m always checking in with all the players and Matt is enjoying his rugby at the moment and if he plays like that every week we don’t want him to go anywhere.

“That’s sort of out of our control at the moment, out of my control.”

He had earlier explained that Moylan had one of his best games in a Leigh Leopards shirt with the full-back adept under the high ball, something that he had struggled with against Hull KR in Round 26.

The Leigh Leopards boss had said: “I thought Aaron Pene was really good, I thought Owen Trout was good, I thought Brad Dwyer had some impact. In fact the whole bench contributed.

“I thought Matt Moylan probably had his best game in a Leigh shirt for as long as I can remember.”

Should Moylan leave then Leigh would have four available quota spots with just Edwin Ipape, David Armstrong and Aaron Pene overseas players in 2025, however, Derek Beaumont has promised three new overseas signings.
