Leigh Leopards boss Adrian Lam addresses Matt Moylan speculation

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam has addressed reports suggesting Matt Moylan could be set to retire at the end of the season. Reports emerged down under last week that Moylan was considering his future in the game, with retirement at the end of the Super League season a distinct possibility.

That came before Leigh’s strong showing at Salford Red Devils on Friday night which set up this weekend’s trip to Wigan Warriors in the semi-finals of the Super League play-offs. Moylan played an important role on the night for the Leopards and he’ll be involved once more at the Brick Community Stadium as the club bid to keep their season alive and reach their first ever Super League Grand Final.

Speaking ahead of the game, though, Lam played down reports, with the head coach claiming there was nothing to report at this present moment in time.

“The timing of it wasn’t good in the sense that I think it came out last Friday before our Salford game,” Lam said when asked about the Moylan reports and his situation.

“If it is Matty’s last hurrah then we will deal with that as it happens but, as we speak, at the moment there’s nothing there yet.”

Leigh Leopards head to Wigan on Saturday in a game that will be broadcast on Sky Sports and the BBC and having come this far, last year’s Challenge Cup winners are dreaming of reaching yet another showpiece event.

“For us, little old Leigh, we’ve worked really hard over the last two years to get some silverware and success here and these are the moments and times that we want to be a part of. It’s part of our DNA, we feel.

“Our fans haven’t had much to cheer about over the history of Super League and this is probably the most important game to the club in that history. We understand the importance and we’ll go there with that reflected in our performance.”

Asked what reaching the Grand Final would mean to him, Lam added: “It would be incredible. I’ve been around rugby league a long time, I never won one as a player, I played in a couple but I never won one.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the group of boys and everyone involved with the team. It’s going to take a hell of a mighty effort to go there on Saturday night and get a win there but that’s what we’ll need to do to get what we deserve.”
