Leigh Leopards were dealt a real off-season blow with the retirement of Matt Moylan and it’s now being reported that the Australian could be set to put the boots back on, albeit Down Under.
The Leopard’s slow start to the season ended around the same time as when Moylan moved to full-back and quickly lit up the league, being a huge part of the side’s remarkable rise up the table.
He had previously joined the Leopards for the 2024 season after departing Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, with whom he had spent a number of years as starting stand-off.
That position is where he began his career with Leigh, but a revert to fullback was what paid dividends, and saw him record 18 try assists across the season – the eighth-highest number in the league, ahead of the likes of Jai Field, Lachie Miller, Bevan French and Jack Welsby.
However, the 33-year-old called time on his career following the end of the campaign, forcing Adrian Lam back to the drawing board for 2025.
Former Leigh Leopards man Matt Moylan may go back on retirement decision
Now though, the Newcastle Herald in Australia is reporting that Moylan might be about to go back on that decision.
They suggest that the head of football for Wyong Roos, Craig Sandercock, “hasn’t completely shut the door” on making the signing of the former Leigh Leopards man.
Sandercock, formerly a Hull KR head coach and assistant coach at four different NRL sides, joined the Roos in May of this year.
At the time, Wyong Leagues Group CEO Ben Coghlan said: “The Roos eagerly look forward to seeing Craig’s vision, strategy and direction being implemented over the coming years.”
This would certainly demonstrate a vision being in place – bringing a top, top talent to the side to bring something different.
The Roos used to play in the NSW Cup, but now compete in the Central Coast Division Rugby League – meaning Moylan would be a huge name within the division.
Alongside him would be Joey Leilua, a former Samoa international who was at RFL Championship club Featherstone Rovers in 2022 and 2023 after over 200 NRL games, after it was confirmed that he had penned a deal with the Roos.
