Leigh Leopards half Lachlan Lam has praised his side’s “toughness” after bouncing back from a terrible start to their season.
After just one win in their first seven games, the Leopards fought back, and finished the regular season with ten wins from 12, qualifying for the play-offs in fifth place.
Now, they have made it to the semi-final stage for the first time thanks to a victory over Salford Red Devils.
Leigh Leopards man Lachlan Lam praises “toughness” of his side
Lachlan Lam, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, referenced the side’s start to the season, saying: “After each loss it gets a little bit tougher, and it gets to a point where you need to start winning games to make the six.
“We addressed that. I think we went through a period there where we only lost a couple of games inside maybe 11 or 12 games. So, I think that put us in good stead coming into this game now.”
He added: “I think injuries didn’t help to start the year, and if you start on the back foot, you’ve got to find a way to go forward.
“It’s a pretty tight group mate. There’s a lot of people leaving at the end of the year so we have to find a way and a reason to win medals.”
The Leigh defence was excellent all game, and Lam said: “If you look back, there’s a history in all big games – there’s not many points.
“I think defence is going to win you the big games at the end and you see our score your opponent there. We’re turning up for each other. We’ve got a big reason: there’s a lot of players leaving.
“They’ve done a very good job for us, mate. So we’re just trying to keep turning up and defending for our team.”
