Leigh Leopards prop Robbie Mulhern has shared his opinion as to how his side reached the Super League play-offs against the odds.
Despite a terrible start to the season, with just one win in eight games, the Leopards had an unbelievable finish, where they managed to secure fifth spot.
Leopards owner Derek Beaumont, in characteristic fashion, served a ‘humble pie’ to Jenna Brooks after their spot was confirmed – and although it was certainly an interesting way of showing it, it did show just how surprising it was to many that they’d managed to achieve it, with the club surpassing the expectations of many.
Robbie Mulhern on how Leigh Leopards reached the play-offs
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Verdict, Mulhern explained: “We weren’t too hard on ourselves after the first half of the season because of all the injuries we had.
“That’s sport and rugby league in general, it’s a physical game and you’re always bound to pick up a few injuries.
“We had a big meeting about if we really wanted to make it. We’ve had a theme around this season, there’s a lot of people leaving, it’s like last dance mentality.
“I think it just took a huge fight, it would have been easy for us to put the cue in the rack and take it easy, but we flipped it on its head and we worked really hard – and we’ve got what we deserve.”
Speaking about the side’s confidence going into the play-offs, he said: “It’s sky high.
“I think we’ve always had belief, even when we were struggling at the start of the season, that once we get a bit more fit, we’re a challenge to anyone.
“We’re just taking it one game at a time and we just believe in the quality that we’ve got in the team, we believe in the coaching staff’s plan, we believe in each other and I think that’s a really shining through on the pitch.”
