Leigh Director of Rugby claims Super League star is worth £1 million

Chris Chester is no longer a Head Coach like in his days at Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity but is now a Director of Rugby at Leigh Leopards.

Thus, his job is to sign players and retain stars and he has done that brilliantly at Leigh.

So, he is placed brilliantly to give an assessment of the value of other Super League stars.

On Sky Sports over the weekend, Chester was a guest during St Helens’ win over Huddersfield Giants and was asked about the value of Jack Welsby.

Chester then stated that Welsby was worth half the salary cap and subsequently would be worth £1 million.

“Pretty much half our salary cap mate, he’s that good,” he said.

“It is worrying for a head of rugby and a a team like us that Saints are just getting into gear.

“You can never write St Helens off. They are a every quick, physical side down the middle.”

NRL clubs are reportedly interested in the fullback and they will have to pay a sizeable fee for the fullback if they want him.

Despite his praise for St Helens, Chester believed their opening try against the Giants should have been disallowed:

“I totally agree. That one should have been disallowed. A pretty easy decision to make.”
