Leigh Centurions set to make two major signings ahead of huge Featherstone Rovers clash

Derek Beaumont owner of Leigh Centurions applauds the home supporters after seeing his team win for the first time this season

The Championship is pretty much a two-horse race now between Featherstone Rovers and Leigh Centurions.

That isn’t dismissing the possibility of another side making it into the Super League, but it’s perhaps just reality of the situation.

Both Rovers and Leigh have spent heavily in a bid to bankroll themselves to the top flight with the likes of Joey Leilua joining Featherstone and Caleb Aekins joining Leigh.

That has meant that both sides have built extremely formidable teams that would not look out of place in Super League – though the quota rules present in the first tier would mean that Featherstone and Leigh would have to cut some non-British players from their squads.

And, the recruitment from both sides has not yet finished either; Rovers announced the signing of Johnathon Ford at the weekend to go with Mark Kheirallah – both of whom were vital in Toulouse Olympique’s charge to Super League.

Determined not to be outdone, Leigh’s outspoken owner and chairman Derek Beaumont is set to announce two major signings before the two meet, according to Bradford Bulls journalist The Game Caller.

He tweeted: “Hearing the Leigh Centurions and Derek Beaumont will have two more big signings to announce in the coming weeks. They will arrive in time for the huge Round 15 Championship clash between Leigh and Featherstone in June. Both clubs are spending over £1M on the salary cap this year.”
